I regularly write about making an effort with your own personal development, as well as making an effort with your own running… I got an email from a lady who told me that effort should not be needed and that we needed inspiration… I think she wanted lightning bolts coming from the sky, which I did not think was all that practical.

Often, when I suggest to my clients that I have some continuing work for them to do outside of the face-to-face sessions together, they sigh with a sense of despair!

Often, when my students are happily staring at me teaching them, when I tell them to get into pairs to do a practical exercise, they make a sound not too dissimilar to a teenager being asked to go to bed before midnight by his parents… A sort of cross between a groan and a whine…

Often, when I tell fellow runners they need to engage in a psychological process every day for a week, they look at me like I just told them to run 5 marathons.

Why is it that people do not necessarily like stepping into action? Even if it will undoubtedly result in their own betterment?

It seems that as soon as you hand over the effort to them… Instead of me doing all the effort… That the very energy keeping them breathing and living seems to drain out of them right before your eyes. It is crazy, worse and more noticeable than when someone claims to have seen a ghost.

So to make that effort seem less like a chore, I have fun, I inject enjoyment, laughter and fun into the work I do with people… Sometimes though we all need some more energy. Of course, you listen to your body if you are a runner who is fatigued, but if you need a psychological shot and require vigour, zest and energy, then this self-hypnosis process is for you.

It may be myth, someone told me that Paul McKenna is the most unread bestselling author in the UK. That is, many, many millions of people invest in his books, but never actually read them. It takes some effort to read… And then even more effort to actually understand the concepts in the book and a colossal amount more effort to then apply the strategies and techniques to yourself and your own life, doesn’t it?

“Uurgh… Can’t you just wave a magic wand over me and make things change without all that fuss?”

Oh come on!

You want to take responsibility for yourself when it comes to your progress with running – today’s self-hypnosis technique is aimed at helping you do just that.

5 Steps To Use Hypnosis To Conduct Your Own Orchestra of Energy:

Step One: Just ensuring that you are in a comfortable position where you are going to be undisturbed for a while, with your eyes comfortably closed, your arms and legs uncrossed and just focusing on your breathing.

Really notice your breath, just observe it so that you are not interfering with it… Do this for a few moments, just watching it happening. Then start to breathe in a rather unusual way…

As you inhale deeply and slowly, imagine that you are breathing through your body…  imagine that beginning at your feet, you breathe in and upwards through every pore of your body, all the way up to the top of your head…. Feel relaxed throughout your entire body as you breathe out through each pore right down to your toes.

Just enjoy this body breathing process for a couple of minutes and imagine drifting deeper inside your mind and creting a good receptive state.

You can of course use any other technique or strategy to develop a receptive mindset… Or you can go and read my book on self-hypnosis and learn how to really get good at this process.

Inhale upwards through your body, through every pore… feeling that breath move up the entire length of your body… Then exhale downwards from the top of your head, down through your neck, your shoulders, your arms, every pore, your chest, your abdomen, your hips, your legs, your feet…

For some alternatives, have a look at the following articles as and when you need them; they are basic processes to help you simply open the door of your mind:

Then, once hypnotised you move on to step two.

Step Two: Now imagine yourself seated in a large, magnificent theatre. make it of your own design entirely. The seats are coloured in your favourite colour, or a most conducive colour, note the surroundings, get a sense for this place that you create in your own mind.

You can hear that the orchestra is playing your favourite music. Just enjoy it for a few moments.

Also, there are many people in the theatre. As you look around, you notice that everyone is happy and contented and enjoying themselves. So soak up the atmosphere and let that deepen your state of receptivity and relaxation.

Step Three: You notice that the people there are all smiling naturally and enjoying the music as much as you are.

As the orchestra continues to play, your attention focuses on the orchestra leader, for as he conducts the orchestra, he uses both hands, holding a baton in one hand. This baton controls the pace and tempo of the music and it fascinates you. Get absorbed in what he does for a few moments.

As the baton gradually slows down the music, you feel yourself becoming even more deeply relaxed. And when the music stops, there is complete cessation of movement and complete silence and complete relaxation. Every nerve and every muscle in your body is relaxed and you feel very connected.

Now, as you let yourself drift awhile, you become even more relaxed. Your attention now focuses on the orchestra leader who has turned around to face the audience. See him take a bow. As you gaze at the orchestra leader, you see that he is moving in your direction. As he nears you, you recognize him as a representation of your mind… That’s it… He represents your mind!

Step Four: You go ahead and greet each other, he holds a mirror in front of himself. You gaze into the mirror and see yourself.

And as you are looking at your own reflection, your unconscious mind (this man or woman) is telling you that you love and approve of yourself. You feel this so strongly, that you repeat it to yourself, over and over again. You feel so good that you want to tell everybody in the room just how good you feel.

Now here comes the fun…. Without any hesitation, you stand up and tell everyone in a loud and clear voice that you love and approve of yourself…  It fills you with energy just to exclaim it! You look around and as you sit back down, they begin clapping their hands. They liked what they heard you say.

Your mind smiles at you and asks you to look back into the mirror and to make a wish for something that you would really like to happen… Ideally, to be more appropriately energised!

Then go ahead and imagine that what you had wish for (increased enthusiasm and energy) is really happening in the mirror. Suddenly the mirror becomes a giant movie screen and you and all of the people in the room are viewing your wish coming true. At the end of the scene, everyone applauds you. You are touched so deeply that you want to stand up and say something.

You announce again to the audience:

I. I am more and more energised – thank you all!

II. Each moment of my life is becoming more captivating, even if I do not realise why or how… This energises me more – thank you all again!

III. I give thanks now for my life of health, wealth, happiness, and perfect self-expression (you can add whatever you want to add here) – thank you all!

You might want to take a bow?

As the people clap and cheer with approval, you sit down and your mind turns around and returns to the podium. He raises his arms to signal the orchestra to prepare to resume playing. As you watch his baton swaying back and forth in rhythm to the music, the tempo begins to quicken and liven up. You feel so refreshed and recharged…. So full of ‘life’.

Take lots of time over this, really soak up more and more energy of the orchestra playing and energising you. Just bask in it!

Step Five: Once you have done this for long enough, wiggle your toes and fingers, become aware of your surroundings and your body and open your eyes.

Take an action that is proof to you that you have more energy and enthusiasm for your own training, running and development. Go and do something that you may not have done yesterday… And go and enjoy a run!

Ok, I’ll not be around next week as I am running a hypnotherapy training course, but I’ll be back the following week with updates, techniques and getting ready for the five marathons ahead.
